Rar File Format
RAR is nowadays a very popular format for the compression of files, although its relatively recent development (it was created by 1993). The format itself poses a flexible bunch of options that turn out to be very helpful.
For instance, RAR files can be packaged to different levels of compression, from very loose to extremely packed. In the first case, disk space is sacrificed and in the latter, a bit of computer processor time. And taking into consideration the popularity of RAR files on the Internet, the most compressed the RAR file format can be, the better in terms of bandwidth consumption.
Another feature is the option to put a recovery record, so as to recover in case of a failure. The option to obtain a self-extracting executable is also worth mentioning, along with the once unique RAR file capacity to encrypt the whole content of the file, avoiding even to list the files inside the RAR.
Of course, the file extension RAR is an acronym. It derives from the name of the developer, a Russian software engineer, Eugene Roshal. That is, the File Extension RAR - so commonly spread among internauts - comes to be: Roshal Archive. Though others, claim it might have another less individualistic meaning: Rational And Reliable.
