CyberLoafing, a Bit of Procrastination at Work is not too bad, after all

Cyberloafing is a well known tendency among the current workers, who usually have access to the Internet at their workstations. It basically consists of wasting time in personal duties at work time. There are whole libraries and treatises of the losses experienced by the companies due to this very common behaviour.

But, a little time for the personal stuff at work might well have a big ROI, in a previously unsuspected way. According to Andrea Polzer-Debruyne, Ph D student at Massey University, New Zealand, who conducts a research on personal Internet use for her Psychology Thesis, the reasonable use of small amounts of time in cyberloafing may give back more profits to the companies.

It seems that the persons who have access to an Internet workstation and spend a few minutes of the day (at working time) in personal issues are more prone to spend time working at home than the persons who do not have such access. It is beneficial to the employers, as the employee will be ready to pick up customer phone calls and reply to emails from home.

Another interesting benefit is that the employee can release some stress, and if the amount of time is controlled (at least not exceeded beyond reasonable), it may well report a pronounced increase in productivity.

Among the conclusions of Polzer-Debruyne, it is highly remarkable that the Internet-enabled worker can use the Internet to spend less-time in personal activities (that otherwise might turn heavy in terms of effort and time, e.g. buying groceries at the supermarket compared to order them online). As a direct result, people have a more organized schedule and can dedicate enough powerful time to work.

See, guys! Go on and tell your boss to please stop chasing you like a mad dog, just because you are paying a bill from your HomeBanking webpage. Maybe the boss is wasting much time trying that you do not waste time at work. Just kidding!
