On the verge of new technologies which enable the use of alternative sources of energy, Solar Energy is a topic highly discussed in Engineering and Economics. It is not only the nature of Solar Energy, but also the cost of the installation of a working system compared to the conventional wired systems what is on the balance of sustainability.

Barry Cinnamon, CEO of Akeena Solar recently accepted the invitation to a Q&A round with Scientific American journalist and from his well-informed point of view, it can be extracted the following conclusions on the use of Solar Power.

  1. It is an almost infinite source of Energy.
  2. The scope is not still industrial. That is, there is not a project to build a centralized Solar Energy plant. The focus was and is the home installations.
  3. The total cost of Solar Energy for home uses is not so cheap. Although the solar energy by itself is free, the cost of all the wire and nuts of the System is still expensive. What is more, according to Cinnamon, the cost of the watt is the same as the Oil/Coil Systems, but it tends to be higher in non-peak time.
  4. The Complexity of the Solar Power Systems is Reducing. When the first industrial efforts to popularize the use of Solar Energy began, one of the gray blocks was that the installation and setup of the System was too complex. Right now, Akeena is producing solar panels with all-included wires and capable of being integrated as pieces of Logo.
  5. The Cost for the Industrial Operation of the Enterprise is still high. And there is not much financing for such kind of projects, nowadays. The crisis and the shrinking of the credit market is in part responsible of the lack of credit to start up a Solar Energy-based project.

We hope for the best that the intensive research currently conducted and the commitment of the Governments to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels - and the Global Warming, by the way - can help to reduce the cost of production of the Solar Energy Systems..
